Arena for Gateshead Quays a step closer

A full planning application for the Gateshead Quays development project, which includes a 12,500-seat arena to be managed by ASM Global, has been submitted by Gateshead Council’s development partner Ask: Patrizia.

A joint venture between Ask Real Estate and German investment group Patrizia, the scheme comprises a 10-acre complex on Newcastle Gateshead Quayside that will house a £260 million arena, along with a 300-room hotel, three exhibition halls, an outside performance square, shops and restaurants.

Designed by HOK, whose projects include America’s 75,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the venue is due to open in 2023.

“Our appointed contractors Sir Robert McAlpine have been engaging with the technical teams and with the arena operator ASM Global and we have signed-off Stage 2 designs for what will be a world-class events destination,”  says Ask Real Estate MD John Hughes.

ASM Global, created by the merger of AEG Facilities and SMG Europe, operates more than 310 venues across five continents, including The SSE Arena – Wembley (cap. 12,750) in London and s Manchester Arena (21,000).
