ASM Global to manage new Gateshead arena

News
22 October 2019

ASM GLOBAL, the venue management giant created by the merger of AEG Facilities and SMG Europe, has won the contract to operate the 12,500-capacity arena planned Gateshead Quays.

A joint venture between developer Ask Real Estate and investment manager PATRIZIA, the venue will host concerts, conferences and exhibitions, and is scheduled to open in 2023.

“The North-East has always been an important region for us,” says John Sharkey, executive VP of Europe for ASM Global. “We look forward to building upon the success of [former SMG venues] the Utilita Arena [cap 11,000] and Whitley Bay Playhouse [638], and leveraging our regional strength to further develop the events landscape and grow the North East economy.”

Full planning submission will take place in early 2020 and it is anticipated that the arena will open three years later.

ASM Global operates more than 310 venues across five continents, including former AEG Facilities-managed The SSE Arena – Wembley (cap. 12,750) in London and SMG’s Manchester Arena (21,000).
