Ditto lends development support

ONLINE MUSIC distribution platform Ditto, designed for independent artistes, managers and labels, has announced a new one-day unsigned music conference and networking event, Ditto X.

Mike Murphy, who manages the ‘record label in a box’ side of the platform, says that the goal is to build panel discussions that help independent artistes understand the wider world of the industry. The event takes place in London’s Shoreditch on 2 May.

“We’re using a great upcoming venue called Juju Bar & Stage, working with a cap of around 150, and the emphasis is on celebrating and exploring the ways that unsigned acts can break out into bigger audiences,” he says.

“One of our panels will be discussing how to get playlists on the radio, and another will tackle the challenges in being booked for major shows.

“In both cases it’s about educating people in areas that aren’t necessarily immediately obvious, and encouraging debate in terms of the support and resources that will be needed to achieve those successes.”

Murphy adds that the guest speakers have also been picked for their own work within unsigned and emerging scenes.

“We’ve announced Abbie McCarthy, for instance, who came up through BBC Introducing and can give insight from that perspective, as well as her tenure on Radio 1, and John Fischer, the chief booker for VICE who works with numerous small cap venues in London,” he says. Tickets cost £99.
