Happiness begins with Khamsin

LIGHTING DESIGNER and production manager for the Jonas Brothers’ Happiness Begins tour, Baz Halpin, wanted a fixture that would create a larger-than-life look that would complement the LED screens and floor, the central feature of the production.

He opted for 200 Khamsin fixtures by French manufacturer Ayrton to illuminate performances at venues including The SSE Hydro (cap. 13,000) in Glasgow, Manchester Arena (21,000) and The O2 (21,000) in London.

“The show’s lighting design works in tandem with the video production,” says Halpin, whose company silentHOUSE also provides tour production. “The truss configurations frame the main LED screens, and there are no trusses downstage of the LED floor. We opted to light all the performers from the side. The result is that the LED at centre stage dominates the visuals with no other elements taking away from the show.”

Halpin positioned the Khamsin in the pit, upstage and offstage to give silhouette opportunities. “Khamsin has a bright, uniform field, great colour and significant effects from the individual macro-control of the LED engine,” he says.
