No bones about promoter’s success

READING PROMOTER Wicked Boy Promotions, is looking out for acts of all genres to perform in the variety of eclectic shows it runs five-to-six times a month in venues across the town.

Having spent 10 years promoting acts in the area, head promoter Bones says he owes his success to the diverse local talent available not only in Reading but from grassroots scenes further afield.

“You need to stay adaptable as a promoter, and so each of the nights I run has a different model depending on the genre, the acts available and the audience engagement,” he says.

“For instance, the acoustic nights I run at Oakford Social Club [cap. 175] each month have been a good draw for showcase events, usually with out-of-town headliners promoting a new record and local Reading acts underneath them on the bill.

“Then there’s a heavy night that covers sludge, stoner and doom acts: it started out as a gig-swapping exercise with my own band working with artistes in other areas, and is now a monthly night culminating each year in an all-dayer, Sludgefest, all held at The Face Bar [250/150].”

Bones adds that Reading has always provided good crowds for those willing to adapt to the town’s nuances.

“There’s a university here but actually moving nights away from the campus and into the town tends to work better – it means when they go off for summer you don’t lose your entire audience,” he says.
