Star delivers arch performance

TWO 38 metre span arches towered over an in-the-round performance area, the X Stage, at All Points East, London’s new 40,000 capacity festival in Victoria Park.

This was the key challenge for staging and production specialist Star Events, which was contracted to provide all four stages, plus supporting structures for the festival after signing a four-year contract with organiser AEG Presents in December.

“There were significant structural challenges,” says Star’s project manager Gavin Scott. “In the end, we were able to join two five metre wide and 38 metre span arches at the apex.”

Most of the structure was built using stock items, he says using specially fabricated units at the apex and base of the structure.

While the X Stage showcased electronic talent, the main stage, headlined by LCD Sound System, The xx and Bjork, was a Star 20 metre VerTech system.

“We were well prepared with core structural designs confirmed early [by the client],” says Scott. “Despite over 30 ‘artics’ of equipment arriving at Victoria Park, it all came together quickly, which gave us flexibility to deal with the inevitable changes to production specifications.”

Additionally, the company installed a six metre high structure for sponsor Sony, which welcomed festival-goers and needed to be fully accessible.
