Taking Vaccines to Vegas

A TOUCH of Las Vegas was among the creative ideas served up by The Vaccines to designer Dan Williams, as they prepared for their Combat Sports tour.

Singer/guitarist Justin Hayward-Young proposed a neon-style light lining the edge of the risers, complemented by a pair of scenic palm trees.

Williams worked this idea into his design, centred on a gold-sequinned drape, replete with the band’s logo, calling on West London’s Colour Sound Experiment to provide a package of lighting. Tour dates include Newcastle’s O2 Academy (2,050), Motherwell Concert Hall & Theatre (1,800) and London’s Roundhouse (3,300).

“The band shared mood boards and videos they liked [with me], and we started designing from there,” says Williams. “I expanded the lighting plans using a colour scheme and other ideas, directly influenced by the band, who wanted warm colours like red, amber and white.”

The Vegas-style riser lining comprised a row of Martin VDO Sceptron 10s while the backdrop was lit with Portman P3 PIX3Ls and a JDC1 strobe, positioned on 1.5m scaffolding poles mounted on floor bases. Six Claypaky A.leda K20 B-Eye LED wash lights were also positioned in a U shape around the band.

“The colours that come out of the B-EYEs are great and always look good on camera,” says Williams.
